Everette Shoates - Coralwood's
2012 Teacher of the Year

Coralwood School’s 2012 Teacher of the Year is recreational therapist, Everette Shoates.

Everette started his undergraduate degree at the Tuskegee Institute and completed it at Morris Brown College.

As Coralwood’s recreational therapist, Everette has the opportunity to work with all the children at Coralwood to improve their motor skills and is well known to the entire Coralwood family.

Everette Shoates

Everette is always willing to help Coralwood achieve its highest performance level – he recycles, shares bus duty, deals with children with discipline issues, helps the Performing Arts Committee and serves as Coralwood’s official photographer.

Everette’s inspiration is his mom, Lela Shoates who has a brother with special needs. For many years, she worked at Coralwood helping preschoolers with motor disabilities. Lela is now retired from Coralwood and is well remembered.

Everett is married to Chiniqua, a hair stylist and is the father of three girls, Brijea, thirteen years old, Jahvia, eleven years old, and Eryss, five years old.

Everett and his family enjoy the outside and he photographs his beautiful daughters enjoying all their activities. Recently he had the pleasure of photographing his daughter, Jahvia while she was cheerleading. In his spare time, Everette coaches wheel chair basketball, and wheel chair handball with the DeKalb Adaptive Sports Program.

Congratulations to Everette Shoates! Thank you for being part of the Coralwood family

A Conversation with Dr. Melanie Castelle

I recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with our new principal, Dr. Melanie Castelle. Dr. Castelle comes to us with many years of experience in special education and administration. While working in Paulding County, she was the only teacher for the deaf and was able to establish Special Olympics there.

Coralwood Foundation 2nd Annual Homecoming

Coralwood School’s 2nd annual homecoming celebration was held on Friday, September 6th. It was a huge success with over 200 current and alumni families attending. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to reunite with old friends, staff and teachers as well as meeting new friends.

Kid activities were the highlight of homecoming with a parade, playground time and a special guest performance by Mr. Eric Litwen, author of the first two Pete the Cat books and popular cd’s. He engaged the entire audience including children and parents in songs and stories. Special commemorative cups were given to all attendees to celebrate the occasion.

The Coralwood Foundation also kicked off its Coralwood Challenge fundraising drive and encouraged families and the community to pledge donations to support classroom equipment, staff training and development of school-wide programs.
