About Coralwood
The Basic Facts
Coralwood School is a public school in the Dekalb County School System, serving children ages three to six. The School is distinguished by its approach of "inclusion education": students with special needs are, where possible, educated in classrooms alongside typically-developing students. Inclusion is a term which expresses commitment to educate each child, to the maximum extent appropriate, in the school and classroom he or she would otherwise attend. It involves bringing the support services to the child (rather than moving the child to the services) and requires only that the child will benefit from being in the class (rather than having to keep up with the other students).
The school has Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten
classes in which typically developing and students with disabilities work together in integrated skill level settings. Students age three to six may also attend school in more structured settings of the self-contained classes.
The school offers speech therapy, vision therapy, audiology services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, music, physical education, library services, nursing, parenting classes, parent support classes, a social worker and a diagnostic team. In addition, Coralwood serves young students within the community setting with a visiting support teacher model.
The school has two system-wide functions within the Dekalb County system: 1) It is the systemwide center for preschool diagnostic services, and 2) it contains the Dekalb Audiology Department.

Coralwood provides preschool inclusion grounded in maximizing the potential of every student. Our philosophy is based on the premise that school can be informal and individualized for all students and still provide a high quality education. Children are innately curious and Coralwood desires to help our students understand and explore their environment in a safe manner. Students progress at different rates and have different interests and learning styles. Coralwood addresses the cognitive, language, motor, self-help and personal-social facets of each child, and celebrates abilities and gifts of all students.
